Our Processes of Manufacturing Iron Powder Metal Parts
Raw Material-Mixing Powder
For iron based powder metal parts, the most component material is “Fe”. But also need many other chemical elements to form a certain iron. So first we need to mix the different chemical elements into full mixture, according to the ingredient by using powder mixing machine.
This step requists highly precision on every elements. If not so, it will affect the quality of the finished iron powder parts.
Pressing to Shape
Put the mixed powder into presses. We have presses from 25-800 tons. Capable of making powder parts from 1 to 18mm. However, not all shapes can be made with this method. Usually types are gear, bushings, bars, squre nuts. If your parts have very complicated structures, we will use MIM method. That’s another types of powder metallurgy.
In the pressing process, engineer will keep checking the density, shape, size of the products. In case of any problem, will need adjust the powder or the machine, die. This is one of the most important steps in manufacturing powder parts.
Sintering the Metal
Sintering the pressed powder parts with ovens. The sintering oven is running automactically. Workers need to put parts into the starting conveyor belt. Then it will run into the oven and stay the process 3-20 hours. Different parts request different time of sintering. Finally, workers collect the sintered powder parts from the conveyor belt too.
Precision Machining or Stamping
Not all the powder parts need this process. Just some parts have special structures, such as screws, grooves, or other shapes can not be pressing in one time. Sometimes a bushing or gear need very precision inner or outside dimension. We need put them into another stamping machine to press again. we call it “Integer”. Of cause, need mold to do it. If your iron parts not such strict requirement, suggest not necessary to do.
Ultrasonic Cleaning
Ultrasonic cleaning is to clean the dirt engaged in the former steps. It is essential before quality checking.
Quality Checking
Workers will carefully checking the quality after the powder parts come out from the cleaner. We have Physical and chemical testing center for powder material testing. Testing equipment for our iron powder parts include but not limited to Three coordinate detector, Image projector, Pressure testing machine, Carbon sulfur analyzer, OLYMPUS CK51M Optical Microscope.
The Iron Parts will be under the following QC processes.
- Laboratory test analysis
- Metallographic detection analysis
- hardness test
- density measurement
- crush strength test
- surface roughness test
- length measurement and testing
Deburring, Heat Treating and Surface Finishing
Most of the powdered parts need deburring. But only some need Heat Treating, surface coating. If you have hardness requirement, we will send them to heat treating. For powder metallurgy part, suggested surface treatment are blacking and dacromet. We can do the salt spray test for your parts to test the anti-rust performance.
Anti-rust oil immersion
Most of the powder parts need vacuum anti-rust oil immersion to keep the part good.
Quality Checking, Quantity Checking and Packing
This time quality checking will be more on appearance. That will do at the same time with quantity checking and packing.
Storage and Transportation
After packing, send the finished iron powder parts to our storage house and waiting transportation.
